Weekly News: Week 33

It's hard to believe that Week 33 of the school year has ended! Where has the time gone?

On Monday, students took the 6th Grade Math Placement test. It can be a very stressful day for our fifth graders but they all tried their absolute best and I was very proud of their dedication. Information regarding the Placement test timeline can be found HERE.

In Writer's Workshop we began our last writing unit... Memoirs. It's a wonderful way to end 5th grade and their elementary school careers by thinking about themselves and what makes them unique.

I've really been enjoying the conversations we've been having as we dive deeper into our Memoir Unit. Check out your student's Google Classroom account to see more of what they've been writing.


We are nearing the end of our Revolutionary War unit in Social Studies. We've looked at the battles, studied the roles that women played in the cause, and studied a few of the major battles. Without France's help we might still be with Great Britain! The Unit 6 Social Studies test will be on Tuesday, May 9th.


Next week Mohr School will be raising money for the Wheelchair Foundation. More information will be posted next week.

One last thing... today's Friday Folder includes a permission slip for 5th grade's Human Growth Unit. Please read the letter carefully and return it by Tuesday, May 23rd. The Unit will be taught on Thursday, May 25th and Friday, May 26th. The Parent Preview will be on Monday, May 22nd.

Flipped Math Lessons

This week we are trying something new in math... Flipped Lessons!

What are "Flipped" lessons?
A flipped lesson allows students to preview and learn material at home, while allowing class time for more in depth discussions, notes, and better opportunities for students to ask questions surrounding a topic. Flipped lessons give more students a voice in their learning and can provide a better understanding of new material.

How does it work?
The night before a lesson, students will get a chance to preview the information, watching Mr. Habecker's video and answering a few questions from their homework book before extending their knowledge further.

What will students have to do the night before?

1. Head to our Math HW Form Spreadsheet HERE or in Google Classroom
2. Click on the lesson assigned
3. Watch Mr. Habecker's video & complete the corresponding HW questions in workbook
4. Answer the questions on the Form 
5. Submit your response

I've asked the class to help me out this week in providing feedback on Flipped Lessons. My hope is that this allows students more of a voice in our daily class discussions centered on math and open up the room for a deeper understanding of concepts.

Weekly News: Week 32

This week was pretty busy as we headed to the A's Game on Wednesday! The kids loved hanging out at the ballpark and having snacks. It was a great day with beautiful weather.

Students also worked on their second, and final, argument writing piece. If they did not finish in class today, they are finishing them up this weekend. We also studied the similarities and differences between George Washington and King George III as we delve farther into the Revolutionary War.

Yesterday we started reading the novel Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. This a great novel set during the Revolutionary War, and is the beginning of a trilogy. Students will be reading it in class and participating in a digital book club with their classmates. Students can access their documents through Google Classroom.

Today, the school had a flag salute and our leadership kids did a great job leading it. A freeze dance party even broke out!

Next week we will be having three BYOD days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. I am hoping that we can start bringing our devices everyday to finish out the school year. If next week goes well, it will become an everyday occurrence. Remember to bring devices that are fully charged!

A's Game- Thank You!

Thank you to all our chaperones who helped make the A's Game a huge success! This is always such a fun field trip for the 5th graders as they enjoyed an afternoon of snacks and we got to see an A's win!

Weekly News: Week 31

What a busy week we had! We took the Module 5 Test finishing up volume, area, and quadrilaterals and began Module 6. Everyone always loves Module 6 which is graphing! We have started with learning the basics of the x and y axis, origin point, coordinate pairs... We will be working on Module 6 until the Mid Module 6 test. That will be our last Module test for the school year.

In Social Studies we worked all week on our Declaration of Independence Flipbooks, which are due on Tuesday, April 18th.

We also made these adorable Bunny Art pieces. We incorporated our use of Zentangles and bright pops of color. Check out our work below!
