Week 22 Newsletter

Wow! What a busy couple of weeks we've had. This week we finished up our Unit 4, Life in the Colonies in Social Studies, which had us taking our unit test as well as a notebook check. We spend so much time collecting information in our Social Studies notebooks, so I'm always glad to see the effort everyone puts in to their work.

Next up will be Unit 5, Cause of the Revolution. We are finally ready to learn what was happening in the Original 13 Colonies, and what led the colonists to fight for independence. This is always a really exciting time in 5th grade Social Studies.

Our writing has also expanded into historical informational reports. Students picked a topic from a list of U.S. History topics and they've begun to research. This paper will show more of their knowledge in what is necessary with informational writing, while looking at it as a historian. We will study primary sources, maps, timelines, and people to better understand our historical event.

Thank you for all the cards and well-wishes for my birthday yesterday! It was so nice to spend the day with everyone!

Today in music class with Mrs. Robertson, students learned about Jazz music and how to scat. She took a video of our class, and in particular Vadim, showing off his new found scatting skills. I think you will enjoy the video! VIDEO LINK

URGENT:
The cold/flu season has been sweeping through our classroom, as several students have been absent over the last several days. We've been wiping desks and cleaning hands to try and combat the coughing and sniffling. As a result, our tissue supply has been wiped out. If you have any tissue boxes that you are willing to donate, we would be very grateful!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • Tues, Feb 6
    • GATE test
  • Wed, Feb 7

Kindess to Caring

KINDNESS TO CARING

Join Mohr Elementary as we connect with a Santa Rosa Elementary School
We will be collecting Gift Cards from Nov. 6-Nov 16th.

Dear Friends of the Sonoma County Fire Victims,
Nine families that are a part of the Proctor Terrace Elementary School in Santa Rosa lost homes in the fires and are currently moving into new housing.  They have literally lost everything.
In the days since the disaster there has been amazing outreach and generosity.  We appreciate the effort to reach out to families that are a part of a school community similar to yours.  Since the disaster there has been an abundance of clothing and school items available and the children have had their immediate needs met.
All of our families that lost houses are currently in the process of relocating.  They can use items to rebuild their homes-kitchen wares, linens, books, children’s games, toys... most everything you could think of.
We suggest gift cards from Target, Wal-mart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, because they have a variety of items or a cash donation.  The donations will go DIRECTLY to the families.
We will definitely share where their gifts came from or if you include a card, please let them know personally.
From the bottoms of our hearts and from Proctor Terrace Elementary to you, THANK YOU!
Nancy Cartan (Third Grade Teacher)
Proctor Terrace Elementary, Santa Rosa

Mohr Elementary has connected with Proctor Terrace Elementary in Santa Rosa. Many of our current 5th graders were penpals with students from this school when they were in Mrs. Huggins' class in 3rd grade. I hope you will consider donating a gift card that can help a few Santa Rosa families start to rebuild their lives.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Donation Opportunity: U.S. Road Maps Needed

Needed: paper United States Road Maps (from AAA or another auto club)

Our class and Ms. Britto's class will be starting an interactive United States project to end our Social Studies curriculum and we are in need of road maps. If anyone has a paper map that they are willing to donate to the classroom we would really appreciate it.

The students will be writing on the maps, so please donate items you do not need returned.

If you belong to AAA and can go to a nearby location, we'd love any maps you are able to get for our class. My hope is that we can get at least 11 paper Road Maps.

Mohr School's Fun Run for STEAM

EAGLES ON THE MOVE!
It's time for Mohr's 5th Annual Fun Run!  This event promotes a healthy lifestyle while fundraising for our school.  We will have two tracks on the fields behind Mohr (about 1/8 of a mile each).  Classes will be assigned a track, and students will run, jog, or walk as many laps as they can for 20 minutes during their scheduled time within the school day.  All students will receive a one-of-a-kind Fun Run for STEAM t-shirt.  Check out our generous sponsors below!  We envision the day to be filled with school spirit, music, laughter, and exercise!  Here is what you need to know for a fun and successful Fun Run for STEAM:
  • Online Donations!  Donations can easily be made online using PledgeStar.  Web based fundraising makes it much easier for you to request pledges from your family and friends.

    Go to http://pledgestar.com/mohr

    1. Enter your name and e-mail address, then click Register
    2. Receive an email from Mohr Elementary with the subject "Mohr Elementary Fun Run for STEAM Instructions"
    3. Open the e-mail and receive your passcode.  Then, go back to http://pledgestar.com/mohr where you entered your name and e-mail, and type in the passcode that you just received
    4. Follow instructions on screen to set up your child's profile

When you finish with registration, the system will e-mail pledge requests to your family and friends, who can then make secure credit card donations online.  You will get notified each time a pledge is made, and your family and friends are sent detailed thank you notes with the Mohr PTA tax ID number.  You can track your pledge progress online as well.  Please call 888-598-7510 if you need help.

  • T-shirts will be distributed the day of the Fun Run for STEAM.
Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and running shoes.
Regarding pledge sheets, we are asking for flat donations as much as possible this year.  Please use pledge sheets only as an alternative to online donations.  All pledge envelopes, checks, and cash donations should be returned to school on or before the day of the Fun Run for STEAM on March 29, 2017.  All donations are tax deductible.  Checks should be made payable to Mohr PTA (tax ID 94-3274369).
Prizes will be awarded this year based on levels of donations collected.  There will be prizes for the grade level and class that collects the most in donations.
Thank you in advance for your time, support, and donations.  For additional information, please see the Eagle Express or contact Rachel Cisneros or Shishir Gundavaram at committeechairs@mohrpta.org.

Donations

Our class is in need of two items: glue sticks and tissue boxes. As allergy season kicks in, we're running through tissues at a rapid pace. We have also gone through almost 200 glue sticks since August.

If you are interested in donating either item please have your child bring it to school.

Thank you in advance!
