Week 25 Update

Just a quick update on a few important things happening over the next few weeks... 

Report Cards

Today (2/22) your student will have their progress report and Friday folder as usual. This is the last one for a few weeks as I start to work on report cards. Report cards will be coming home on Friday, March 8th.

Read-a-thon

In your Friday Folder you will see a sheet about the upcoming Read-a-thon to help raise funds for our school and classroom libraries. The PTA is sponsoring this event. Next week is full of spirit days to help spread the word.

• Monday, 2/25- Fox in Socks. Wear silly or mismatched SOCKS.
• Tuesday, 2/26- Green Eggs & Ham. Wear GREEN.
• Wednesday, 2/27- Horton Hears a Who. Random Acts of Kindness
• Thursday, 2/28- Cat in the Hat. Wear your favorite HAT.
• Friday, 3/1- Favorite Things. Dress as your favorite story CHARACTER.

Math Test

The Module 4 math test is on Friday, March 1st. This will be the first math grade of the 3rd trimester report card. 

Class Economy

Our next Pay Day is on Thursday, February 28th. Our next Class Auction will be on Monday, March 4th.

Science Fair

Please see my email with all the latest information about the upcoming science fair. This is 100% optional and is open to anyone wanting to participate.

Science Fair

We are excited to share with you information regarding this year's Mohr Science Fair!  The Science Fair is on March 21st and we are looking forward to this annual event here at Mohr.  On  Wednesday, February 20th, we will be selling the Science Fair board that students use to display their experiments.  We have always done this as a courtesy and convenience for our future scientists.  The boards are sold at cost and at a lower price than buying them at the store.  Each board sells for $3.75.  We will sell the boards until they are gone. On the 20th of February (Wednesday), your child can purchase a board after school in the library. We will be selling them starting at 3:00 in the library.  Cash is accepted or checks can be made out to PTA.

Week 27 Newsletter

So many things have been happening this week! In reading we've been working on summarizing complex nonfiction texts which often feature multiple main ideas. This can be tricky work, but I'm very impressed with how hard everyone has been working.

Today, students turned in their second nonfiction writing assignment, this time featuring a Historical report. These reports will be graded and will become the first writing grade of the 3rd trimester. Please do not expect to see them on the report card that will be sent home next Friday.

In Social Studies next week we will start diving into the Revolutionary War. This is always such a fun unit as we explore how our country earned their freedom from Great Britain.

Science Fair

Hello Mohr Families,

The Annual Science Fair is March 15th in the MPR here at Mohr School!  This is a fun event for ALL students and families. Please consider participating this year.

Here is what you will need to know:

• Students can work on a project by themselves, with a partner or in a group of three.
• There are many ideas out there to explore. Just look online Websites for Science Fair ideas or in a book or think of what you would like to learn.
• The science boards can be purchased at school (until we sell out for $3.50). You can also find them at Walmart and Office supply stores.
• You can bring in your project on Wednesday (March 14th) after school to the MPR from 2:50 - 3:30.   OR......
• You can bring it when you arrive at school on March 15th. Those coming to school at 8:00 am please bring your project to MPR. Those arriving at 9:00 please drop your projects off in the MPR. Kindergarteners arriving later can bring them by the MPR when they come to school in the morning.
• Families are invited to come and view the projects on Thursday evening from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm in the MPR.
• There is a Science Fair booklet (science fair booklet) with some information about the scientific method that will help guide you through your project and discoveries.

About the Boards:

• Please make sure your name (First and Last) in on the lower right side of the board.  Please include your teacher's name and your room number.  If you have any partners then their names and teacher's name and room number also needs to go on the board.
• There is an easy form you can fill out that you can just attach to your board PRIOR to turning it in.  form to put on science project

Week 22 Newsletter

Wow! What a busy couple of weeks we've had. This week we finished up our Unit 4, Life in the Colonies in Social Studies, which had us taking our unit test as well as a notebook check. We spend so much time collecting information in our Social Studies notebooks, so I'm always glad to see the effort everyone puts in to their work.

Next up will be Unit 5, Cause of the Revolution. We are finally ready to learn what was happening in the Original 13 Colonies, and what led the colonists to fight for independence. This is always a really exciting time in 5th grade Social Studies.

Our writing has also expanded into historical informational reports. Students picked a topic from a list of U.S. History topics and they've begun to research. This paper will show more of their knowledge in what is necessary with informational writing, while looking at it as a historian. We will study primary sources, maps, timelines, and people to better understand our historical event.

Thank you for all the cards and well-wishes for my birthday yesterday! It was so nice to spend the day with everyone!

Today in music class with Mrs. Robertson, students learned about Jazz music and how to scat. She took a video of our class, and in particular Vadim, showing off his new found scatting skills. I think you will enjoy the video! VIDEO LINK


URGENT: 
The cold/flu season has been sweeping through our classroom, as several students have been absent over the last several days. We've been wiping desks and cleaning hands to try and combat the coughing and sniffling. As a result, our tissue supply has been wiped out. If you have any tissue boxes that you are willing to donate, we would be very grateful!

Weekly News: Week 27

This week was the first week of the 3rd trimester! We are two-thirds of the way done with 5th grade. Wow! In just a few short months all the students will be heading off to 6th grade.

Last week we had studied the Lincoln Assassination plot and learned a lot of new information. To show what the students learned they created Wanted Posters for John Wilkes Booth & we also memorialized President Lincoln. It was a fun way to end our mini-unit on Lincoln.

In math we started Geometry (Module 5)! We're learning about Area, Volume, and beginning to draw 3-d prisms. This is always a popular module as the kids love to figure out the different shapes.

Social Studies has us right in the middle of the 1760s as the colonies begin to realize they want to fight for their independence. We've learned about the French & Indian War, The Royal Proclamation of 1763, The Stamp Act, and The Quartering Act of 1765. Students are beginning to realize why the American colonies wanted to fight Britain for their freedom.

On Thursday we earned our second class party and had delicious root beer floats. It was the perfect way to cap off all the hard work they've done for the last few months.

Report Cards went home today with your student. Please sign the envelope and return on Monday.

We are excited to share with you information regarding this year's Mohr Science Fair!  The Science Fair is on March 14th and we are looking forward to this annual event here at Mohr.  Next Tuesday, February 14th, we will be selling the Science Fair proboards that students use to display their experiments.  We have always done this (Thanks to PTA) as a courtesy and convenience to our future scientists.  The boards are sold at cost and are a lower price than buying them at the store.  Each board sells for $3.50.  We will sell the boards until they are gone. Next Tuesday your child can purchase a board after school in the library. We will be selling them at 1:55 for the morning readers who are dismissed earlier.  All other students can buy their boards at 2:50.  Checks can be made out to PTA.

Science Fair

Hello Future Scientists and families:

Mohr's Science Fair is coming soon.  It is Tuesday, March 4th.   In order to start thinking about a project, look for information that will be coming out in the Eagle Express through email.  The first event is next Thursday, Feb. 6th.  We will be selling the science boards used for displaying your science project.  They are being sold for $3.00.  You can purchase one after school in the library from 3:15 - 3:45pm.  Any boards left over can be bought through the office.  If you are writing a check please make it payable to PTA.
