Last Week of School

Just a couple of updates for our last week of school...

Desk Cleanout
On Tuesday we will be cleaning out our desks. Students should bring an empty backpack to school to take home all their work.

Pool Day
Wednesday is our last field trip to the Pleasanton Aquatic Center (DBAC) on Black Avenue. We will be gone pretty much all day. I've attached the Pool Day flyer so you know what your student needs. Each student should come to school with their swimsuit already on and a lunch.

Field Day & Nacho Party
Thursday is Field Day and the 5th grade Nacho Party. Please take a look at the Field Day signup for volunteers. We are still in need of help to make the day run smoothly. Right after Field Day will be our Nacho Party. Thank you to everyone who signed up to bring something in. Please remember that this is a nacho party for the entire 5th grade. Please make sure you bring in the right quantity of items. Nacho Party Signup

Culmination
Friday is the Culmination! The ceremony is set to begin at 10:30am in the MPR. Everyone is invited to attend. Normally the ceremony lasts about an hour and then students are dismissed to leave with their families. Report cards will also be going home that day.

On a personal note, I cannot thank you all enough for all the kind words, gifts, and notes I have received over the last couple of weeks. Leaving Mohr has been a tough decision but you and your students have helped make it a wonderful experience. On Wednesday I was hired by an elementary school up in Idaho where I will be teaching 4th grade next year.

Thank you to everyone who came by Open House and stopped to chat. It's been an absolute pleasure being your child's 5th grade teacher this year.

Kites!

Every year the fifth graders make kites using string, straws, tissue paper, and a lot of patience! It can be a frustrating activity as it does require a lot of fine motor skills and knot-tying capabilities, but the reward is great! Everyone was so proud of their kites, and we had a great afternoon out in the sunshine.

I've uploaded photos and videos of our kite-flying... check them out HERE!

Summer Can Food Drive

Keep the food bank shelves stocked with nutritious and non perishable foods during the summer! Most needed items are canned meats and fish, whole grain cereal, low sodium soups, nuts and beans, brown rice and quinoa, and peanut butter.

Let's fill the food donation cans in front of Mohr with much needed food donations for summer!  Our collection will be from May 20th - 24th.

Upcoming Events

Attached to this week's progress report is a letter highlighting all the important dates that are coming in the next few weeks. I've also included the letter here. Please keep these dates in your calendar as we have so many events in these next 6 weeks.

Middle School Math Placement Test
On Monday, April 22nd, students will be taking the Math Placement Test for middle school. This is a paper and pencil test designed by the 6th grade teachers, featuring all 5th grade standards. This test features 2 parts. Part 1 is 30 multiple choice questions. Part 2 features 3 word problems. Students will be completing both parts on Monday. This test can cause a lot of stress for students, so please talk with them about trying their best. I know that many students want to score well enough to be placed in the 6/7 math class next year. All the questions are taken from the 5th grade standards. I recommend reviewing old tests, if you wish to prepare.

CAASPP Testing
5th grade begins testing the week of May 6th.  These computer tests will be happening in the morning, so please help to make sure your student is well rested, has eaten breakfast, and is on time to school. In 5th grade we take 2 ELA tests, 2 Math tests, and 1 Science test for the state. Please be on time to school.

Science Fair

We are excited to share with you information regarding this year's Mohr Science Fair!  The Science Fair is on March 21st and we are looking forward to this annual event here at Mohr.  On  Wednesday, February 20th, we will be selling the Science Fair board that students use to display their experiments.  We have always done this as a courtesy and convenience for our future scientists.  The boards are sold at cost and at a lower price than buying them at the store.  Each board sells for $3.75.  We will sell the boards until they are gone. On the 20th of February (Wednesday), your child can purchase a board after school in the library. We will be selling them starting at 3:00 in the library.  Cash is accepted or checks can be made out to PTA.

We are looking forward to another successful Science Fair.  If you have any questions you can email Mrs. Stanford (lstanford@pleasantonusd.net) .
Thank you!
