Week 15 Newsletter

It was so nice to come back after a relaxing week off from school. We jumped straight into Module 3, where we are learning to add and subtract fractions. It's always a very fun unit of math.

We are also finishing up our Poetry Anthology projects. Students have been writing many different types of poems all centered around their poetry topic. It's been wonderful to see how creative everyone is! By Monday students should have their Poetry Anthology project submitted on Google Classroom and one slide of their presentation printed out. We will be hanging up their poetry in the classroom.

Today we started our new class novel, Blood on the River, which tells how the English settlers created the colony of Jamestown. It's always a big hit in the classroom, and leads to a lot of great conversations with our social studies as well. We will be reading the book together, and students will be working with their groups to talk about vocabulary and think deeper about the story.

To celebrate KINDNESS in the month of December, all students have the opportunity to complete 31 kind acts. In their binder, students have a calendar filled with ideas for kind deeds. I can't wait to see how our class, and our school, spreads kindness.

Our class economy is really on a roll! So many of our students have been successful in earning and saving their money... they've already purchased their desks! Instead of owing rent every month, now they can keep that money.

A fun opportunity this month... students have the opportunity to get in the holiday spirit by gift wrapping their desks! I have many fun gift wrap options and students are able to use their class economy money to purchase a gift wrap for their table tops. We should have a very festive room for the month of December!

Also, a huge thank you from our school! Thanks so much to all the classes that participated in our Kindness to Caring Gift Card Drive.  We were able to give all 9 families $200 worth of gift cards. We truly have an amazing community that is willing to reach out to others, and show our students that "acts of kindness" go beyond our school. Thanks again from the 3rd Grade Kindness Ambassadors!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • Monday, December 4th
    • Poetry Anthology submitted & one slide printed

Kindess to Caring

KINDNESS TO CARING

Join Mohr Elementary as we connect with a Santa Rosa Elementary School
We will be collecting Gift Cards from Nov. 6-Nov 16th.

Dear Friends of the Sonoma County Fire Victims,
Nine families that are a part of the Proctor Terrace Elementary School in Santa Rosa lost homes in the fires and are currently moving into new housing.  They have literally lost everything.
In the days since the disaster there has been amazing outreach and generosity.  We appreciate the effort to reach out to families that are a part of a school community similar to yours.  Since the disaster there has been an abundance of clothing and school items available and the children have had their immediate needs met.
All of our families that lost houses are currently in the process of relocating.  They can use items to rebuild their homes-kitchen wares, linens, books, children’s games, toys... most everything you could think of.
We suggest gift cards from Target, Wal-mart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, because they have a variety of items or a cash donation.  The donations will go DIRECTLY to the families.
We will definitely share where their gifts came from or if you include a card, please let them know personally.
From the bottoms of our hearts and from Proctor Terrace Elementary to you, THANK YOU!
Nancy Cartan (Third Grade Teacher)
Proctor Terrace Elementary, Santa Rosa

Mohr Elementary has connected with Proctor Terrace Elementary in Santa Rosa. Many of our current 5th graders were penpals with students from this school when they were in Mrs. Huggins' class in 3rd grade. I hope you will consider donating a gift card that can help a few Santa Rosa families start to rebuild their lives.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Tomorrow is the official end of the  first trimester. Report card conferences begin on Wednesday, November 8th and end on Thursday, November 16th. It is a busy two weeks as I prepare all the students' grades and meet with every family.

As a result, there will not be any Friday Folder or Progress Reports for the next few weeks. They will resume once we return from Thanksgiving Break.

Thank you!

The Mid Module 1 Error Analysis is due Friday, September 15th.

Friday is around the corner, and so is the 3rd annual Mohr Dandiya event, scheduled for Fri, 09/15, from 6-10pm in the MPR. We have received a few questions about the event, so we’ll try to answer them briefly here:

1. WHAT IS DANDIYA?

The word Dandiya literally means colorfully decorated sticks. In the context of this event, however, Dandiya represents a "stick dance" that is usually performed in a group. It is hard to explain, so take a look at these two videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NUfGMTMUew
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEcFFtDnyXc

Clearly, some of the attendees in the second video can’t dance, which leads us to the next question …

2. CAN I ATTEND IF I CAN’T DANCE OR DON'T KNOW THE CULTURE OR CUSTOMS?
Of course!!! This event is designed to bring the ENTIRE Mohr community together. It will be a fun night to enjoy music, spend time with friends, and eat fresh Indian food. Your PTA will be THRILLED if you could attend. And please go ahead and invite your family and friends too!

3. WHAT DO I WEAR?
See the videos above. Most of the attendees will wear traditional Indian outfits, but wear whatever you feel comfortable in, preferably something colorful. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask us at SoarAtMohr@gmail.com.

4. I’M INTERESTED! WHERE I CAN BUY THE TICKETS?
You can buy them online at:

http://MohrDandiya.weebly.com

The price is $15 for adults and $7 for children from the ages of 5-11. This is the EARLY BIRD price. In order to plan the logistics for this event -- which is only 8 DAYS away -- and place orders with the vendors, we will be INCREASING THE PRICES over the weekend to $17 and $9, respectively. So, please purchase your tickets before the prices go up, or the tickets sell out.

5. WHAT DO I GET FOR THE PRICE OF THE TICKET?
First and foremost, you are contributing to your PTA; 100% of all funds will go to enriching the lives of our children and our school. And second, the ticket price includes the Dandiya experience bollywood style (i.e live music, dancing), introductory classes for adults and kids who want to learn to dance, music performances, and a 9 course Indian buffet. There will also be prizes for best-dressed boys and girls! And if you are a PTA member, you will get a free pair of colorful Dandiya sticks, while supplies last.

What are you waiting for? Click on the link above, and see you at the event!

Kids Against Hunger Update

A message from the Friends Helping Friends club...

Friends Helping Friends would like to THANK the Mohr community for their donations of over $2,500 to Kids Against Hunger!  This allowed the 2nd - 5th graders to pack over 12,000 meals during Mohr Kindness Week!  Many of these food packets (decorated by TK, K and 1st graders)  will be making their way to the storm victims in the Texas area after the tragedy of Hurricane Harvey. Together, the Mohr students make a huge difference!  Thank you!!!!!

Another big, huge THANK YOU goes out to the parent volunteers that gave their time to make our Kids Against Hunger packing event such a success!  We appreciate your time that you gave to us!  Without you, we would not have been able to provide this amazing experience for ALL of our students!!

Back to School Action Items 2017

I'm so happy to have your family in my classroom this year! To help speed up the process for Back to School Night, below are a few things you can do now.

First, please fill out the embedded Google Form with information for your family. This will help you stay updated on everything that is happening in the classroom. You can also fill it out HERE, if the embedded document doesn't work.

You can also subscribe to our website by looking on the right hand side for the "Follow By Email" tab. This will provide you with updates to your email address anytime I post something new.

Second, there are TWO signups you will want to check out this week...
Parent Volunteers -- 2 room parents are needed to work together to help plan parties, send emails, be a liaison for PTA information, etc. Also please sign up to be a driver for any future field trips we will have. I will only be emailing parents from this list to be drivers for all future field trips.

November Conferences 2017--
please sign up for a report card conference time that will be held the week of November 13th, and a few on November 8th and 9th.

Third, please link up with me through REMIND. Remind will let me send out important alerts and reminders about assignments, tests, field trips, etc straight to your phone or email. You can also contact me through the site. I do recommend if your child has their own device, phone or tablet, you think about having them sign up too. It will give them direct access to information and keep them accountable for their own work.

You can go to this link, https://www.remind.com/join/2c7bfh to sign up, or download the Remind App to your phone.  You can also follow the instructions below.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you on Thursday at Back to School Night at 6:15pm. There is an informational meeting with Mrs. Berglin from 6:00-6:15 in the MPR prior to our class session. Our classroom is upstairs, room 12C. Please remember this is only for parents, students do not need to attend.

Culmination Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the 5th grade culmination! The ceremony begins at 10:30am in the MPR and should last around an hour. 5th graders are welcome to leave with their families at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Many students will be dressed nicely (think Picture Day) but it is not required. We would like you and your child to be comfortable in whatever they choose to wear. Keep in mind that the school dress code needs to be followed.

See everyone tomorrow for the last day of elementary school!

Open House Tomorrow!

Hope to see you all at tomorrow's Open House! The classroom will be open from 6:30pm-7:30pm. The class has been hard at work and has a lot to show off.

Since we have a lot of Digital Projects this year, it is recommended that you download a QR Code Reader onto your phone prior to visiting the room. The app is free to download. Here's an example of an iPhone app. Having this on your phone will allow you access to your student's Digital Portfolio.

The Art Show will be in the MPR and is open from 6pm-8pm. Stop by and see a piece of your child's artwork!

Weekly News: Week 35

This week was our first week of state testing and the class did a great job! It can be a little overwhelming to spend your mornings reading passages and answering questions, all while staying really quiet, but the class handled it really well!

We also finished our kites, which looked wonderful hanging from the ceiling in our room. They are ready to be viewed at Open House this Thursday. The school year is winding down pretty quickly and there is still so much to come.

Our last Social Studies unit will be a pioneer unit featuring the Oregon Trail. The class has been divided into six Wagon Companies, and has been making key decisions in what items their wagon brings with them on their journey to the Willamette Valley. Along the way the wagons will encounter choices that could ultimately decide their fates.... it should be a great way to wrap up 5th grade.

Just a reminder... we have the Math CAT tomorrow morning. Please be on time to school! We start right at 8:15.

Upcoming:

  • Monday, 5/15
    • Math CAT
  • Thursday, 5/18
    • Math PT

Weekly News: Week 34

The first week of May found us finishing up our study of graphing in Module 6, wrapping up our exploration of the Revolutionary War, and starting a few fun projects.

On Thursday we started putting together our Kites. This takes a lot of patience and attention to detail but the kids loved putting together the beginning frames for their Kites. We will be putting the finishing touches on our kites next week.

We also started our Geometry project... Geometrocity! Together with their table groups they will be designing their very own city complete with neighborhoods. This gives students a chance to put their Geometry knowledge to the test. The cities will be ready for viewing at Open House.

Donation Opportunity:
We are in need of paper road maps of the United States. If you belong to an auto club, like AAA, please consider stopping by a location and asking for a couple of their free road maps. We are in need of at least 11 maps to complete our Social Studies simulation. More information can be found HERE. Any help you can give is much appreciated!

Reminder:
We start our CAASPP Testing on Monday. Please have all students at school on time as we begin testing right at 8:15am. I recommend bringing a book in case you finish the test early. This week we are taking the ELA portions of the state test.

Monday, 5/8-- ELA CAT
Thursday, 5/11-- ELA PT

Upcoming Events

  • Monday, 5/8
    • ELA CAT
  • Tuesday, 5/9

    • DARE Graduation.
      • Amador Theater.

Donation Opportunity: U.S. Road Maps Needed

Needed: paper United States Road Maps (from AAA or another auto club)

Our class and Ms. Britto's class will be starting an interactive United States project to end our Social Studies curriculum and we are in need of road maps. If anyone has a paper map that they are willing to donate to the classroom we would really appreciate it.

The students will be writing on the maps, so please donate items you do not need returned.

If you belong to AAA and can go to a nearby location, we'd love any maps you are able to get for our class. My hope is that we can get at least 11 paper Road Maps.

Wheelchair Foundation

Wheelchair, People - Free images on Pixabay

Dear Parents,

This week Mohr School is participating in a district-wide effort to support the Wheelchair Foundation.

The 3 primary goals of the project are:

  • raise awareness about the need for mobility in the world
  • sensitize students to the issues faced by people with intellectual/developmental and physical disabilities
  • raise money to provide wheelchairs for those in need

Our monetary goal at Mohr is to collect donations that represent $3.50 per student.  That would be the equivalent of providing approximately 14 wheelchairs for people who are unable to afford one.  For the price of a school lunch, students can change a life by giving the gift of hope and mobility.

Donations in any amount are welcome, and may be made in the form of cash, checks (to the “Wheelchair Foundation”), or online at http://del-corazon.org/to-donate-to-the-wheelchair-foundation/.

Thank you for supporting this worthy cause and wonderful lesson in compassion for our students!
